When you have mild problems with your skin, it can be difficult to know when to try and take care of it yourself, and when it warrants a visit to the dermatologist. Here are some instances when making an appointment with your doctor is a good idea.
You Have Worsening Skin Discolouration
Having skin discolouration on its own is not uncommon, especially if you have had a lot of unprotected sun exposure. However, if you have discolouration or dark spots on your skin that are starting to worsen, change, or become darker in colour, it is a good reason to visit your dermatologist. You need to know that they are normal and not related to skin cancer. Some discolouration can be due to the early stages of skin cancer, particularly if you are at a greater risk for it. It is best to see your dermatologist and have them examine the discolouration.
You Have Persistent Rashes
You might also have rashes on your skin that either don't go away at all or keep returning time and time again. These might be more serious than what you originally imagined. Instead of being simple rashes from using the wrong cleansing product, they might actually be due to an allergy that you should be aware of or from conditions like rosacea or eczema. While these aren't severe conditions, they can be treated by your dermatologist. You also want to be sure nothing more serious is occurring.
You Have Moles That Are Changing
If you have moles, you should already be seeing a dermatologist regularly to have them inspected. Pay close attention to your moles and note any changes. If the mole is suddenly larger or smaller, becomes asymmetrical, has a red circle around it, or changes in colour, you want to contact your doctor. You should also see a dermatologist if your mole suddenly breaks open and starts to bleed, or if it becomes tender to the touch.
Your Acne Isn't Going Away
While acne is not necessarily a cause for concern, it also isn't something you have to deal with on your own. If you have tried changing your cleansing routine and using oil-free products but your acne persists, let your dermatologist know. They often have prescription-strength topical products and cleansers that can help clear it up. They might also find that you have other skin conditions that are leading to the severe acne, which can be treated as well.
